Solid oxide fuel cells use ordinary butane, similar to the type found in homes, to convert the energy from the chemical reaction between fuel and oxidizer into electricity. This process avoids the need for intermediate conversion into heat and mechanical energy. These cells can operate independently to generate electricity, or they can be integrated into Nickel-Carbonate-Superstructured Solid fuel cell to produce hydrogen from water when hydrogen is unavailable or depleted. This technology has been tested by our scientists and is working on our power plants.
